JVD Community Library Reopens by Vicki Samuel Lettsome
GIS
The Library Services Department reopened the Jost Van Dyke (JVD) Community Library on April 24 with an assortment of entertainment activities. The students from the JVD School and Mr. Feliciano ‘Foxy' Callwood entertained the guests with music, poems and stories.
The library, which had its beginnings in the 1980s, will now be located at JVD Learning Resource Centre. Prior to its closure the library operated from a classroom in the JVD School. Now the facility will be operational 40 hours a week Monday-Saturday. 'This gives us a chance to offer a longer service to the community, students, and tourist,' said Acting Chief Librarian Susan Greenaway at the Opening Ceremony.
She also said the Library would soon be able to offer computer and Internet services, once the infrastructure is in place.
Library Assistant Bernice Graham during her welcome remarks invited all JVD residents to use the library, which is there for their benefit.
'A Library is where one should go, read, get information, and leave knowing that he/she is more knowledgeable,' said Ms. Graham.
Invited guest Mrs. Evonda Callendar, Co-ordinator of Government Department Libraries in Barbados told the residents and visitors to use the facility to the best of their ability. 'Don't let it just stay there to be a monument, use it because information is what is going to control the new millennium.'
Mrs. Viliska Allen, Senior Library Assistant would be heading the JVD Community Library. The Library's open hours will be 9a.m.-5p.m. Mondays-Thursdays, 9a.m.-1p.m. Fridays, and 9a.m.-1p.m. Saturdays.
