In 1910 a special Sunday to pay tribute to fathers was set aside by the Ministerial Society of Spokane, Washington at the suggestion of Mrs. John Bruce Dodd. This was just 3 years after the kickoff of the enormously popular Mother's Day. In 1911 Miss Jane Addams of Chicago, the well-known social worker of Hull House, stirred up Chicago with the same idea. "Poor father has been left out in the cold:' she said. "He doesn't get much recognition" The members of a men's Bible Study in Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania quickly endorsed the idea. One of them suggested that the official flower should be the dandelion because' "the more it is trampled on, the better it grows" Red roses, however, became the official Father's Day flower.
