"This is a whole new value proposition for businesses and consumers on the islands," said John Garcia, senior vice president of sales and distribution for Sprint PCS. "We're not just providing consumers with better wireless phones, we're providing them with the clarity, coverage, connectivity and value that has made Sprint PCS the fastest growing carrier for more than three years in a row."
Advanced Technology
The $200 million Puerto Rico/USVI Sprint PCS network, with advanced equipment from Samsung Telecommunications and Nortel Networks, is an extension of its network in the United States and has the same capabilities and services, including 3G or third generation service expected to be launched by mid-2002. 3G will provide faster data speeds, increase efficiency, improve performance of wireless service for users in business and consumer arenas.
Sprint PCS designed its network with 3G in mind. The company built the nation's largest all-digital, single frequency network from the ground up based on CDMA technology, providing a clarity and reliability that made traditional analog networks practically obsolete. Leading 3G standards are based on CDMA technology. Sprint PCS has selected a CDMA2000 migration strategy that is expected to allow the network transition to be made with relative ease and less expense compared to most other carriers.
