Captain Morgan Deal an Economic Turning Point, Governor Says

The signing into law of a 30-year agreement between the government and beer, wine and spirits giant Diageo PLC for the construction of a new Captain Morgan rum distillery on St. Croix signals "an historic turning point in economic opportunities" for the territory's residents, Gov. John deJongh Jr. wrote Thursday.

Schneider Regional Medical Center continues to be plagued by a nursing shortage, millions in uncompensated care costs and a lack of funding that forced executives to ask for an increase in Schneider Regional's recommended fiscal year 2009 budget appropriation.

 

WAPA in Talks with Puerto Rico Utility

The V.I. Water and Power Authority has been in discussions with the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA) about joining St. Thomas into the Puerto Rico grid with an underwater cable as a means of relieving the territory's brutally high utility costs.

 

No Break in Impasse Over AFT Contract

Representatives of the government's Office of Collective Bargaining and the Department of Education met with American Federation of Teachers officials this week to discuss the vote by AFT chapters not to ratify a $20.8 million, 4-year pact.
